Manufacturing Process Development Manager

We’re looking for a highly motivated and experienced senior manufacturing engineer to manage our process analysis and development team within our manufacturing engineering team. We’re looking for someone with an eye for developing LEAN and efficient manufacturing processes within a regulatory framework to help us execute world-class manufacturing to bring the next generation of surgical-assist robot to market.

Reporting to the Head of Manufacturing Engineering, you will take a hands-on approach to managing the day to day running of the process analysis and development group within the manufacturing engineering team and taking responsibility for introduction and validation of processed for the line including automation and fixture development.

You will have the skills to:
• plan and manage the correct introduction of new and updated manufacturing processes for minimum down time on the line
• understand risk assessment processes such as PFMEA, ideally with an understanding of risks for medical devices
• work closely with the design team to identify appropriate processes for manufacturing automation and fixturing
• understand the role of software within a modern manufacturing environment and manage a team of software developers to produce tools to monitor and improve the line

Every day will be different and that’s the beauty of joining our rapidly growing team! As we grow roles will also change and evolve, and as a result, we’d expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the manufacturing engineering remit that helps the team deliver new product to the line. Some of your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Having responsibility for the process analysis and development team within the manufacturing engineering function:
    • High efficiency process identification and creation
    • Risk assessment of manufacturing processes for production of medical devices
    • Establishment of line qualification: IQ, OQ, and PQ
    • Applying LEAN principles to drive down paper bureaucracy whilst maintaining quality
  • Identification of process automation and fixturing and managing the team to implement in a timely manner
  • Identification of software tools and systems (make or buy) and managing a team of developers to deliver
  • Knowledge of Agile project management techniques, especially for software development
  • Working alongside the Manufacturing NPI Manager to planning controlled introduction of new and updated process changes to the line
  • Establishing the appropriate tools for visualisations for the production process KPIs
  • Delivering regular management reports on the progress within the process team to management team
  • Managing the interfaces between the process team with the wider manufacturing function and design function within the company
  • Mentoring the team and assisting with recruitment of high-quality candidates for the team.
  • Clearly communicating the company’s vision and values.

About you

You will have experience of running a team of manufacturing engineers, preferably in a highly regulated manufacturing environment: medical devices, automotive, or aerospace. It would be ideal if you had experience of manufacturing within ISO 13485 certification and FDA GMP.

We anticipate you will have:

  • Excellent communication skills with a significant background in the day-to-day running of a manufacturing engineering team with special focus on manufacturing process
  • An understanding of how process risk maps onto product quality risk, ideally in a healthcare environment
  • A clear understanding of the steps used to validate that the production process delivers high quality product
  • A good understanding of manufacturing of a high-value, low volume, complex mechatronic system
  • An innovative approach to problem solving combined with a solid understanding of systems engineering, able to span engineering disciplines of mechanics, electronics, and software
  • A detailed understanding of the benefits of good software in a manufacturing process environment
  • An understanding of software development techniques, Agile methods (e.g. SCRUM)
  • You may have experience of software development for analysis, e.g. MATLAB or Python
  • An understanding of ERP systems and how the data within them is structured for efficient manufacturing of product
  • Good experience of mentoring and developing teams, having successfully led small teams in the past
  • A responsive approach with the ability to differentiate and prioritise between multiple conflicting priorities without losing sight of long-term strategic goals
  • A good degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience combined with a successful track record of manufacturing engineering in a high-tech, low volume, high quality environment
