Gap Year/ Student Placement - Electronics Engineer

We’re looking for an exceptional Gap Year/Student Placement Electronics Engineer, on a fixed term contract, to join our System Development department based in Cambridge (Evolution Business Park). 

The System Development department designs and develops the electro-mechanical robot system – Surgeon Console, Bedside Units and accessories that, together with the surgical instruments and consumables, comprise the Versius surgical robotic system.  This role is within the electronics team which designs and maintains circuits for the robotic system, including motor drives, various sensors, micros, FPGAs, analogue and digital circuits, video circuits and more. This variety allows engineers to gain a wide experience in the field of electronics.  You will learn what it takes to develop the electronics for complex medical devices as we work together on our mission to transform the future of surgery.

Responsibilities

It is hard for us to say exactly what you will be involved in during your time with us, but we can guarantee that you will be involved in a variety of activities and develop knowledge and skills to provide you with a broad appreciation of electronics designYour work will add value from day one and you will be included in day-to-day tasks and take on responsibility alongside great peopleHere are a few examples of the tasks you might lead and / or support with: 

  • Supporting the design and test of PCBs and electronic assemblies which have a mixture of power, digital and analogue electronics and programmable logic 
  • Capturing schematics  
  • Helping to define and document manufacturing and test strategies 
  • Working with internal and external manufacturing partners to maintain a design that can be manufactured and tested reliably and repeatably 
  • Debugging issues at PCB and system level and writing technical documents to support findings

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

  • A relevant academic background 
  • A “can-do” attitude is essential: good at “getting things done” 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability and willingness to develop new skills 

It would also be helpful if you have:

  • in your final year of A Levels (or equivalent) looking for a gap year of at least 9 months 
  • applying for your 1-year Industrial Placement as part of your university course in Electronics, Mechatronics, or similar discipline 
  • a recent graduate seeking a fixed term contract with a world-class medical devices company!
