Lead Data Engineer

We are looking for a Lead Data Engineer to join the Data Platform Team.  You'll play a key role in the architecture design, software development, maintenance, and improvement of the services and infrastructure that make Versius data available to the whole of CMR for a variety of use-cases. In addition, you will help grow the team and establish a strong culture of continuous improvement - of both products and people!

The Data Platform Team designs and develops infrastructure and services that allow other systems and teams to easily understand what happens on our Versius robot. Although our customers are fundamentally internal teams in CMR, we make the data available so other services can offer great value to end-users, both doctors and patients.

We like to work with data and complex problems that usually require high-availability and high-scalability. We always try to choose the best tool for the job and we are keen to learn new skills. We take collaboration and knowledge-sharing seriously, which means that as individuals we get involved in areas we might not yet be comfortable with be or experts in.  Our mission is to provide a reliable, scalable, and maintainable platform for all digital services allowing CMR to carry on growing, making minimal access surgery more accessible.

About CMR Surgical

CMR is an exciting and evolving company to be joining right now.  Our commitment to our goal of building a world-class medical devices company is underpinned by the ground-breaking innovation of our next generation of surgical robots and a diverse team of talented and supportive individuals.

We’re breaking new ground which makes working here exciting, it provides autonomy, opportunity and makes the things you do visible. Come and join us and see what you’re capable of.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of services and help projects progress through the whole Software Development Lifecycle
  • Engaging with internal technical stakeholders to understand their needs and gain alignment.
  • Work with the team to set the strategic direction and architecture for existing and new systems.
  • Develop high-quality products that are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Promote high-quality coding standards and best practices, including technical documentation.
  • Growing technical colleagues through coaching, mentoring, and teaching.
  • Deliver value to other teams within CMR by making data available for a wide range of use cases.
  • Engagement in the day-to-day collaboration within an Agile Team.

About you

Not everyone has the same background, and the Data Department is proof of that. We have degrees in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Music. We understand that particular tools, frameworks, software, etc. don't define a good engineer. Nonetheless, there are a few musts that we'd like you to check:

  • Experience in leading and building a software development team
  • History of delivering on business objectives
  • Mentoring and developing junior colleagues.
  • Proficient in Python - This is our go-to language and our main tool.
  • Experience with event-based processing - We want the data to be available as soon as possible, event-based processing brings the lowest latency.
  • Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle (best practices), and considerable experience at all stages.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Experience designing and developing data processing solutions.

Ideally, you might have a similar toolbox (perhaps from a different Cloud Provider) to ours:

  • We usually develop micro-services that expose a REST API. We use FastAPI, SQAlchemy, MySQL, AWS Gateway, and AWS Lambda.
  • For long running jobs and other specific needs we use AWS ECS with Docker containers.
  • We create data processing pipelines with AWS S3, AWS SNS, AWS SQS, and AWS Lambda.
  • We use AWS Athena to query our data lake.
  • We also do processing with AWS Kinesis and Apache Flink.
  • We use Serverless Framework, Terraform and AWS CDK for our Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • We use Elasticsearch (AWS Opensearch) for our non-relational needs.

At CMR we’re building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace; what matters most to us is that you identify with our values and are passionate about making a difference so don’t be put off applying if your experience isn't perfectly matched with this role.

We’d really like to hear from applicants from underrepresented groups and we recognise everyone has individual personal circumstances, so we’re open to discussing reduced / flexible / hybrid working hours for this role.

Why Join Us?

We offer a competitive salary and a great benefits package including a bonus, non-contributory pension, private healthcare which covers pre-existing conditions, annual personal day for every employee to use however they wish and enhanced global parental leave pay.

We recognise that everyone has a life outside of work and at times we can experience things which are significant and can impact on our working lives. We’ve just launched our Global Parental Leave and Health and Wellbeing leave supporting our colleagues going through the menopause, fertility cycles or pregnancy loss and those going through gender reassignment; allowing them time to look after themselves and those close to them.

CMR can support with travel reimbursement for in-person interviews, providing you live a certain distance from our offices/ sites or if you need a taxi for access needs. Please just get in touch with us interviews@cmrsurgical.com if you have any questions about this, we’re happy to help.

Interested? We’d love to hear from you!
