Usability Group Lead

We’re looking for an amazing/exceptional Human Factors Engineer to lead our Usability Team, based in Cambridge. Reporting to the Head of Design Evaluation the Usability Group Lead will grow and drive the team to help shape CMR Surgical’s state-of-the-art surgical robotics system through working closely with both a world-class team of engineers and with the healthcare professions that will be using it.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Human Factors efforts to establish, document, implement and maintain a usability engineering process to provide safety for patients and users which satisfies global regulatory bodies
  • Develop and grow the Usability Team
  • Scope and plan usability activities alongside the Project Management and Design Teams ensuring appropriate usability evaluation
  • Support the planning, moderating and reporting of formative and summative usability studies
  • Provide information to other teams about user-facing features, user profiles and the usability engineering process applied to medical devices
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with all relevant cross-functional partners within the organisation
  • Report on progress of group activities to Head of Systems and Reliability

We're a diverse company and roles can change and evolve. You’ll be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Human Factors Engineering remit that supports the team with delivering its objectives. It is expected that there will be some travel for studies, but most will be based in Cambridge, however the applicant should have no restrictions on being able to travel to the US and Europe.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have significant experience in working as part of a development team to meet Human Factors objectives in a challenging and fast-paced environment. We would also expect you to have an inquisitive nature, high attention to detail and excellent verbal and written communication skills. In addition, you should have:

  • Relevant experience in a medical device industry
  • A good degree in a relevant discipline, or significant relevant experience
  • Experience of growing, developing and leading a group
  • Considerable experience applying human factors methodologies
  • Proven practical experience of use-related risk management (UFMEA) in line with ISO14971
  • Significant understanding of user and user interface requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the FDA guidance, BS EN 62366, BS EN 60601-1-8, EU MDR and HE75 and other applicable guidelines and standards
  • The ability to build and sustain productive working relationships across teams

It would also be helpful if you have:

  • Experience of successful approvals for regulatory submissions
  • Experience with complex electromechanical medical products
