Responding to the publication of the report on the Future of Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Mark Slack, Chief Medical Officer at CMR Surgical said:
“This is a much-needed and thorough exploration of the future of surgery which rightly highlights the importance of robotics and the imminent arrival of the next generation of surgical robotic systems.
“We agree with the Commission that minimal access surgery, enabled and assisted by the next generation of surgical robotics, is key to improving surgery for all. The benefits of minimal access surgery (MAS) for patients, including a reduced risk of wound infections and venous thrombosis, decreased pain and less time spent in hospital are clear. Despite clear evidence and NICE guidelines on the benefits of MAS for patients, it is unacceptable that we continue to see over 75% of cases that could benefit from MAS still performed with open surgery. Surgical robotics can unlock the potential of minimal access surgery but uptake of robotics in the NHS to date has been limited due to a number of barriers. Through the introduction of Versius, an affordable and flexible next-generation surgical robotic system, we want to open up the availability of MAS so that patients get better surgery.
