Mechanical CAD Designer

We’re looking for an experienced, collaborative Mechanical CAD Designer to join our Mechanical Development Team, based in Cambridge. As part of our growing mechanical team, you will help to create, analyse and develop our state-of-the-art surgical instruments and robotic technology for laparoscopic surgery. 

You’ll be part of our ambitious, collaborative and multi-disciplinary medical device development team, designing and developing innovative and complex surgical instruments, consumables and electro-mechanical systems for robotic laparoscopic surgery.

We are looking for someone who can: 

  • Create high quality Solidworks CAD models, engineering drawings and parts lists which meet exacting requirements for both high and low volume manufacture 
  • As part of a truly multi-disciplinary product development team of mechanical, electronic, soft-ware and system test engineers, deliver project tasks within agreed timescales and budget from early stage design through to validation 
  • Collaborate widely across teams to ensure that designs are delivered to the highest standard throughout the product development process.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be: 

  • A HND or degree in relevant engineering discipline and experience of working in a regulated industry with proven experience of delivering designs into manufacture within a structured product development process 
  • Experience of creating and maintaining Solidworks CAD models and drawings  
  • Extensive knowledge of modelling and detailing components for most or all of the below manufacturing processes:  
    • Precision machined components 
    • Injection moulding
    • MIM parts 
    • Sheet metal 
    • Complex assemblies 
  • A great team player and as keen as we are to produce work to the highest possible standards. 


It would also be helpful if you have experience of some or all the below: 

  • Geometric tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis and other engineering documentation to achieve high performance and reliability 
  • Working with Solidworks PDM professional and systematic design release and change control processes 
  • Maintaining designs though whole product lifecycle from concept through to V&V and transfer to manufacture
  • Working within a regulated industry 
  • Working with suppliers and manufacturers for DFx activities 
  • Preparing designs for complex electromechanical systems, re-usable articulated surgical instruments and single use consumables.
