Patent Engineer

We’re looking for an amazing Intellectual Patent Engineer to join our IP Team, based in Cambridge. Reporting to the IP Manager, this important role helps ensure the long term success of CMR by protecting the intellectual property of the business.  As part of the IP Team, you will work with colleagues in all of the different areas of technology, clinical, customer success and operations to make sure CMR is in the best IP position possible.  

This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of 3 days a week being based in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and growing CMR’s portfolio of patents, utility models and design rights to build optimum protection for CMR products and services
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining IP processes and tools
  • Keeping up to date and understanding activities of engineering teams within CMR that impact on IP matters and harvesting inventions for patenting
  • Conduct IP landscape analyses and inform on potential IP risks and opportunities
  • Searching, learning and understanding information relating to the Versius system and other surgical robotic systems
  • Providing support and advice to colleagues across CMR on IP matters

We’re a rapidly evolving company and roles can change and evolve. You’ll be willing to turn your hand to anything within Intellectual Property's remit that supports the team with delivering its objectives.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline or other related technical field
  • Familiar with different types of IP and what they protect, especially patents, design rights, utility models
  • Strong attention to detail, great analytical thinking and the ability to think about and to interpret concepts in a creative and abstract way
  • Ability to work with and communicate with different teams with different backgrounds within the company
  • Ability to work with and instruct external counsel, exercising judgement on when to do so
  • Strong interesting in understanding business, financial and commercial drivers for IP and the role of IP in protecting the business and what makes ideas and inventions have good potential for patent filing

It would also be helpful if you have:

  • Knowledge of the robotics landscape; key surgical competitors, other types of robots
  • Familiarity with IP prosecution pathways (UKIPO, EPO, PCT, USPTO) for the various types of IP
  • Basic understanding of international IP laws and other forms of IP such as trade marks, trade secrets and copyrights
  • Ability to recognise IP risks and issues in agreements such as contracts, licenses and terms of business
