CMR Surgical and LifeHealthcare have today announced an agreement to bring the next-generation Surgical Robotic System, Versius®+ to Australia and New Zealand.

The partnership is set to further expand an already advanced surgical robotics market in Australia that is experiencing a 20% average annual growth in robotic procedures. Robotically assisted procedures are most commonly adopted in urology with approximately 10,000 procedures taking place robotically each year, but forecasts predict strong expansion across gynaecology and general surgery if existing barriers to robotics are addressed, including cost-effectiveness.i

Martin Frost, Chief Executive Officer, CMR Surgical commented: “Australia is a globally recognised centre for surgical innovation and a mature market for surgical robotics – making it a great fit for introducing Versius. By bringing a flexible, cost-effective robotic system to Australia we aim to expand the rates of minimal access surgery. To bring Versius to Australia, LifeHealthcare is a natural partner for us, with their strong record of introducing medical devices responsibly. We look forward to working closely with LifeHealthcare in this important market.”

Matt Muscio, Chief Executive Officer, LifeHealthcare commented: “We are proud to have a healthcare sector that globally leads the way in the adoption of new technology. There is strong surgical robotics expertise in Australia and significant potential to help more patients experience the benefits of minimal access surgery. With CMR’s technology, and our knowledge of the market we believe the introduction of Versius will be a real step change to the adoption of surgical robotics in Australia.”

The Versius Surgical Robotic System was awarded the European CE Mark in March 2019 and will launch in Europe shortly with an introduction into the Australian market anticipated thereafter.

The Versius® Surgical Robotic System

Versius® resets expectations of robotic surgery by providing a versatile system that is portable, transportable and affordable. This is made possible because of its elegant form factor, modular design and individually cart-mounted arms. Versius is able to move between operating rooms and even hospitals/clinics and gives the surgical team excellent access to the patient at all times.

Biomimicking the human arm, Versius allows surgeons the freedom of port placement, but with the benefits of small fully-wristed instruments. With 3D HD vision, easy-to adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the new open surgeon console has the potential to reduce stress and fatigue and extend the careers of surgeons.
