CMR Surgical strengthens UK innovation ecosystem by opening only global surgical robotics manufacturing facility in the UK

~  The site is the only UK surgical robotics manufacturing facility located in the UK

~  The 7,000 sq. m manufacturing facility in Ely, Cambridgeshire is home to the design and build of the Versius Surgical Robotic System and is operational following a £10 million investment

~  The facility has the capacity to produce up to 500 Versius systems per annum to meet global demand for surgical robotics

CMR Surgical (CMR or ‘the Company’) – the global surgical robotics business – has today marked the opening of its new surgical robotics manufacturing facility in Cambridgeshire, UK. The news follows the announcement that over 140 Versius systems have now been installed globally and over 15,000 surgical cases completed. The new facility is home to all of CMR’s build and testing of Versius and is a global hub for exports as CMR serves over 20 markets.

The marking of a new manufacturing facility coincides with CMR seeing significant demand for Versius across Asia, Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America as well as Europe.

The facility includes solar panels and rainwater harvesting for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The site is home to production, quality, manufacturing engineering, supply, operations, and logistics, and represents a commitment to home-grown innovation from the UK. Today with 20 NHS hospital partnerships including Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; Addenbrooke’s hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals; and Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust using Versius, the opening of the first UK surgical robotics manufacturing facility further strengthens the UK ecosystem for developing and adopting new innovation.

Barrington D’Arcy, Chief Operations Officer at CMR Surgical, said: “We are proud to have a new global manufacturing facility that is located close to our R&D teams in Cambridge, and in the UK where Versius was born. When we look at what we set out to achieve, the fact that we are designing, developing and building Versius in the UK in order to help patients locally and globally is incredible and in line with what we set out to do as a business. Making a surgical robot is complex and I hope this state-of-the-art facility can help to further boost innovation in the UK.”

The new facility follows the news that the Company has raised an additional $165 million (£133 million) to support continued product innovation and commercial growth.

The Versius® Surgical Robotic System

Versius® resets expectations of robotic surgery. Versius fits into virtually any operating room set-up and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, increasing the likelihood of robotic minimal access surgery (MAS). The small, portable and modular design of Versius allows the surgeon to only use the number of arms needed for a given procedure.

Biomimicking the human arm, Versius gives surgeons the choice of optimised port placement alongside the dexterity and accuracy of small fully-wristed instruments. With 3D HD vision, easy-to adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the open surgeon console has the potential to reduce stress and fatigue and allows for clear communication with the surgical team. By thinking laparoscopically and operating robotically with Versius, patients, surgeons and healthcare professionals can all benefit from the value that robotic MAS brings.

But it’s more than just a robot. Versius captures meaningful data with its wider digital ecosystem to support a surgeon’s continuous learning. Through the Versius Connect app, Versius Trainer and CMR clinical registry, Versius unleashes a wealth of insights to ultimately improve surgical care.
