CMR Surgical (CMR) – the global surgical robotics business – has today announced that Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MKUH) have installed their second Versius Surgical Robotic System. The introduction of the second system at the hospital has addressed a growing demand for robotic surgery at MKUH, giving surgeons at the hospital more opportunity to operate robotically, and their patients the opportunity to benefit from the technology and receive robotic minimal access surgery with Versius.
Versius is a small, modular surgical robot supporting surgeons to perform complex surgical procedures. The innovative small and portable design of Versius allows for seamless integration into busy hospital workflows, and for it to be easily moved between surgical departments, supporting high utilisation of the system. Since its introduction in summer, MUKH’s second Versius system has joined its original system in high utilisation, operating Monday to Friday, and contributing to the hospital’s recent milestone of 800 surgical cases performed using Versius.
At MKUH, Versius is used across a range of surgical specialties, including colorectal surgery, gynaecology, general surgery and urology to undertake an array of complex surgical procedures including anterior resections, hysterectomies, abdominal wall reconstructions, ureteric reconstructions, and nephrectomies. In the first year of introducing Versius, the hospital was able to save 450 bed-days annually, with 8 of those as critical care days.[i]
