CMR Surgical (CMR) – the global surgical robotics business – announces that Urovita Hospital, which manage the NZOZ Hospital Silesian Urology Centre in Chorzow, have installed a second Versius® Surgical Robotic System. It becomes the first hospital in Poland to install two soft-tissue surgical robots at the same site, and the first hospital in Eastern Europe to install two Versius systems.

After installing the first system in March of this year, Urovita Hospital, led by Dr. Marcin Trzewik, Dr. Norbert Szydłowski-Pęśko, Dr. Bartosz Kadlubicki and Dr. Grzegorz Kwolek have performed more than 150 surgeries with Versius and have overseen the expansion of their robotic programme into gynaecology alongside urology.

Urovita Hospital chose Versius because of its small and modular design. It noted the enhanced precision of movement and mobility the surgeon enjoys whilst operating with Versius, as well as the enhanced ergonomics of the console, which allows surgeons to sit or stand in a comfortable position of their choosing.

By utilizing two Versius systems, Urovita Hospital hopes to offer a minimal access approach, assisted by robotic surgery, to more patients with complex gynecological and urological cases. The first gynecological procedures in the country, using the Versius robot, were performed by two teams of specialists consisting of Andrzej Brenk, M.D., Ph. Mateusz Stolecki, Dr. Michal Szpringer, and Anna Bilska Janosik, MD, Tomasz Horzelski, MD, Piotr Stoltny, MD.

Versius provided the surgical team with greater precision and range of tool movements compared to traditional laparoscopic procedures, as well as better insight into the operating field, especially when it came to the lymphadenectomy.

Lesław Polański, CEO of Urovita Hospital, commented: “The long-term objective of Urovita Hospital is to pioneer a real shift to robotics to extend the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to even more patients. We are committed to scaling up our robotic programme. When we began our experience with the Versius robot, starting in March 2022, we were delighted with the scale of our achievements, as well as the quality and level of treatment for our Hospital’s patients. Thus, we believe that having a second robotic system will help us increase the availability of modern treatment for our patients, especially since we perform all procedures under contract with the National Health Fund.”

Mark Slack, Chief Medical Officer at CMR Surgical, said: “We are delighted to be able to partner with Urovita Hospital and support them implement their second Versius system. Our aim with Versius has always been to offer more minimal access surgery (MAS) to more patients and we are delighted to see opportunities for more gynaecological cases to be conducted robotically.”

Versius was designed to enable a much wider use of MAS, offering benefits such as faster recovery times, less time in hospital and reduced risk of infection to the patients. The system is now established as an important surgical tool in a number of leading hospitals across the world, where it is helping surgeons perform a wide range of MAS procedures. It has now been used in more than 5,000 surgical procedures worldwide.

The Versius® Surgical Robotic System

Versius® resets expectations of robotic surgery. Versius fits into virtually any operating room set-up and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, increasing the likelihood of robotic minimal access surgery (MAS). The small, portable and modular design of Versius allows the surgeon to only use the number of arms needed for a given procedure.

Biomimicking the human arm, Versius gives surgeons the choice of optimised port placement alongside the dexterity and accuracy of small fully-wristed instruments. With 3D HD vision, easy-to adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the open surgeon console has the potential to reduce stress and fatigue and allows for clear communication with the surgical team. By thinking laparoscopically and operating robotically with Versius, patients, surgeons and healthcare professionals can all benefit from the value that robotic MAS brings.

But it’s more than just a robot. Versius captures meaningful data with its wider digital ecosystem to support a surgeon’s continuous learning. Through the Versius Connect app, Versius Trainer and CMR clinical registry, Versius unleashes a wealth of insights to ultimately improve surgical care.
