CMR Surgical (CMR) – the global surgical robotics business – has today announced the introduction of its next-generation Surgical Robotic System, Versius, at Hospital Lusíadas Porto, marking the first installation of Versius in Portugal.

Hospital Lusíadas is a mid-size private hospital, part of the Lusíadas Saúde Hospital Group. The 116-bed hospital has 7 operating rooms, and completes over 20,000 surgical procedures annually. At the hospital, Versius is being used as part of a multispecialty programme, allowing for more patients to benefit from robotic-assisted minimal access surgery.

Versius is the only small and modular surgical robotic system on the market. The unique small and modular design of the system can be easily moved between departments and fit into virtually any operating room without the need to alter existing infrastructure. Versius is a small-scale system with collaborative arms and bedside units for direct patient access. It also features freedom of port placement, giving surgeons the flexibility to put the ports where surgeons want, to best suit the needs of each individual patient. The versatility of Versius has enabled many hospitals to adopt a surgical robot for the first time, including Hospital Lusíadas. At the hospital, Versius has initially been used to perform a range of urological and general surgery procedures, including prostatectomies, Nissen fundoplication surgery & cholecystectomies, with gynaecological and thoracic surgery to follow.

Marco Zambonini, General Manager – Continental Western Europe at CMR Surgical commented: “We are thrilled that Hospital Lusíadas have become the first in Portugal to introduce Versius. The system was designed with a small form factor and modularity to suit hospitals of all sizes and has allowed for Versius to be seamlessly integrated into Hospital Lusíadas’ existing workflows. I look forward to seeing Hospital Lusíadas develop their multispecialty robotic surgery programme with Versius, so that more patients can receive the benefits of robotic-assisted minimal access surgery.”

Joana Menezes, Chief Executive Officer of Hospital Lusíadas Porto commented: “We are proud to welcome the first Versius robot in Portugal and the wider Lusíadas Saúde Hospital Group. At Lusíadas, we strive to provide cutting-edge technology to our patients to support the best-possible care. Versius’ innovative small and modular design made the robotic system ideally suited to our busy hospital in our commitment to efficiency and excellence for our patients. We are delighted to be establishing our robotics programme with such a remarkable robotics system and are excited to see the positive impact it has for our surgical teams and patients alike.”

The introduction of Versius at Hospital Lusíadas Porto, the first in Portugal marks CMR’s continued growth and expansion across Europe to bring minimal access surgery to more patients who need it.

The Versius Surgical Robotic System

Versius resets expectations of robotic surgery. Versius fits into virtually any operating room set-up and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, increasing the likelihood of robotic minimal access surgery (MAS). The small, portable and modular design of Versius allows the surgeon to only use the number of arms needed for a given procedure.

Biomimicking the human arm, Versius gives surgeons the choice of optimised port placement alongside the dexterity and accuracy of small fully-wristed instruments. With 3D HD vision, easy-to adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the open surgeon console has the potential to reduce stress and fatigue and allows for clear communication with the surgical team. By thinking laparoscopically and operating robotically with Versius, patients, surgeons and healthcare professionals can all benefit from the value that robotic MAS brings.

But it’s more than just a robot. Versius captures meaningful data with its wider digital ecosystem to support a surgeon’s continuous learning. Through the Versius Connect app, Versius Trainer and CMR clinical registry, Versius unleashes a wealth of insights to ultimately improve surgical care.
